Ah, the 90s

Conversations on Twitter about makeup from the 90s made me think about the products that I used to use. My teenage years started in the very late 80s so this the time I started experimented with make up and hair products.

Just like now I desperately wanted curly hair - unlike now I turned to L'Oreal Studio Line and a dodgy perm to achieve it.

Sun-In was another favourite - I used to drown myself in this stuff which is weird as I was actually quite (naturally) blonde when I was younger.

!Exclamation perfume I certainly remember the bottle but for the life of me cannot remember what it smelt like. Perhaps it was a case of admiring the packaging rather than loving the product.

Ah, Cover Girl - I do remember this little compact. I thought it was the height of sophistication.

What were your favourite products from your early teenage years?

Lip Smackers anyone?

  1. I still remember the Ex-cla-ma-tion commercial song, possibly with the wrong words. (Accentuation! Exaggeration! Exclamation!)

I was all about the Bonne Bell tined lip balm, vanilla musk and/or Revlon's Navy perfume, and a looot of hairgel.

  4. another excellent post my girl! make a statement - without saying a word! i always wanted a bottle of exclamation but seemed to always stick to body shop white musk! eww...or impulse. and as for the sun-in. oh god. i still blame it for my hair being such a mess today. im sure i used it well into my 20s. i was also a big lover of those swirly pots of natural collection body cream you could get in boots!

  5. Rimmel pink and blue eyeshadow. I was young and it was the 80's.

I can still recall the smell of Exclamation. One of my friends adored it and wore it every day. I, on the other hand was a White Musk girl even though it triggered migraines. My sensible mother eventually chucked it in the bin.

  6. I'm still a big fan of Sun-in. Although my hair is naturally blonde, I find that the layers underneath tend to be a much darker shade, because they don't catch as much sunlight as the top layers. I use a little squirt of this every now and then just to even things out a bit.

The product that always comes to mind when I picture my teen years was Impulse body sprays. I had about fifteen different ones, and would spray myself liberally with them every time I left the house.

  7. I used to love exclamation! I used to wear Rimmel a lot. I vividly remember the first time I wore eyeliner on my upper lids - I was 15 and followed a 'how to' in just seventeen. I used a pencil not liquid liner. I'm sure I looked like Cleopatra but I remember being very pleased with the look!

  8. I also loved The Body shop white musk. It was given to me by my boyfriend. I adore the smell to this day. I bought him Mandate (at his request!) I think I got the better deal! I used to wear lots of lipstick, reds, browns, bright pinks and heavy brown eyeshadow. Looking back at photos my eyebrows were huge!

  9. Oooh, we had the same 90s products, apart from the perm and the Exclamation! I was a Body Shop fuzzy peach girl.

I also made use of shaders and toners on my hair, one of which turned me grey. I loved body shop make up and used the multistylo in rosewood and their powder compact foundation. I was also pretty fond of Rimmel lipsticks, coffee shimmer, heather shimmer and black cherry for my goth phase!

  11. My friends and I all bought this perfume called tribe which came in a dark purple bottle and with a free cuddly purple tiger. I think it smelt quite bad!

  12. Oh how I would love to see photos of us all from the 90s!

Black Cherry lipstick was my real favourite but I couldn't find any ads for it at all. I seem to remember it had a little slider to get the lipstick up and down but perhaps that is my imagination?

  13. Im sure it did have a slider! Was the case a sort of dark brownish purple?

My fiance and I first met in 6th form in 1990 - he wore a musk aftershave from The Body Shop. Fast forward 20 years (loooooooong story), we hook up again and he's still wearing it. I instantly feel 17 again every time I sniff him!

  14. Yes it was a sort of browny purply thing. I can't believe I don't have any left - perhaps there is some in a drawer at my mums.

I think it was Lynx Java that was the smell of choice for the boys I knew.

  15. Heather Shimmer, Raisin Shimmer...the Body Shop with lip balm pots and all-in-one eyes/lips/cheeks (in brown tones). Oh, and White Musk and Dewberry.

I also remember everyone was mad for Barry M but you had to gt it by post...FROM A CATALOGUE!

  16. I have a vague feeling that Rimmel lipstick came in 2 sizes. The big grown up twist up ones, and a slightly smaller, cheaper one with a slider. I might be making that up though.

  17. You are definitely NOT making it up about the two sizes of Rimmel lipsticks - I remember them too! The mini ones were great for in your handbag. This post has brought back loads of memories - good and bad! It is amazing how we all used the same perfurmes & lipstick. I had all of the ones mentioned. Rimmel still make Heather Shimmer & Coffee Shimmer.

  18. No I had slidy ones! They were a quid less. That was a copy of Mizz magazine or a hair scrunchie from MK1 in terms of savings. Worth it.
